So it probably doesn't take a genius to work out what the consequences are likely to be if you add a lively 3 year old to a pot of red paint but it always helps if you've got somone in the family who knows what to do when the worst happens. And apparently this wasn't the worst. Oh yes, it could have been far, far worse. You see, young George, having started with his hands, had steadily progressed to various other parts of his anatomy and so, as luck would have it, we were spared some other rather interesting imprints on our stair carpet.
So what to do if this happens in your house? First and foremost, as always, is to act fast. Spoon or scrape up as much of the spill as possible and then attack with water and soft absorbent cloths. Now, you have to make sure you don't saturate the area because that will only make the paint spread but you need enough water to start to free the paint. Just keep misting with water, blotting, misting, blotting etc. With patience and a bit of luck, the stain will disappear. You may need some detergent, so you can use a branded product easily found in the supermarket or you can just add a tiny amount of wasing up liquid to your water. If you do this, then you'll need to flush the carpet with clean water to ensure you don't leave any residues that will become sticky and attractmore dirt.
Afterr doing all this you may want to dry the area off and this is best done with a hairdryer.
If you have no luck in removing the paint, then off course it's time to call in the professionals.
The eagle-eyed amongst you will have noticed that there are some old, dried, white splodges of emulsion paint on the carpet as well as the red hand-prints. How I removed them is for another post, so look out for that.
All the best for now,
GB
