Carpet care tips - pressure marks

This photo demonstrates the effect that leaving heavy objects on a carpet for long periods will have. In this case a bed has left a number of deep indentations or pressure marks.

So how can this problem be resolved?

The two most widely touted solutions involve extremes of temperature. The first is to leave an ice cube in the indentation overnight. As it melts, so the fibres swell and start to return to match the rest of the carpet.

The second involves using steam. Again it would seem to be about getting just the right amount of liquid into the fibres to make them revert to their original condition.

If you were to be tempted to try either of these remedies yourself, I would go for the ice cube first. It seems to be less risky. You will also need a reasonably stiff brush just to agitate the fibres and arrange them so they merge in with the rest of surrounding carpet.

Finally, and this is not always possible, it's a good idea to move your furniture around periodically, so that the marks left behind are not so severe.

Look out for other carpet care tips coming up in the near future.

Until next the time,
